How long does it take to build my marketing team?

I normally need 1-2 weeks to learn about your business and figure out the exact role that's required. From there, it's another week to finalise the job description, which is then posted online and shared with recruiters. Partnering with recruitment agencies can be helpful for specialist roles and leadership roles.

From there, the timeline is difficult to predict because there's some luck involved with who sees and applies for the role. But we normally allow anywhere between 4-6 weeks to find and secure the right candidate. Generally speaking, the timeline lengthens as the seniority level for the position increases, as the right person becomes harder to find as our expectations and standards also increase.

I'll work with you to prioritise the most critical roles first, so you're not waiting months to see momentum.

As for agency partnerships, that's a much faster process. We can have a new agency onboarded and actively working on your business within a few weeks.

Can you help if I'm starting completely from scratch?

Absolutely! In fact, starting from zero can be an advantage because we're not constrained by existing team dynamics or legacy decisions. I'll help you build a marketing function that's perfectly aligned with your business goals from day one. We'll start by defining exactly what success looks like for your company, then design a team structure that can deliver those outcomes within your budget constraints.

What if I already have a marketing team but they're underperforming?

This is one of the most common scenarios I encounter. The solution isn't always to replace everyone - sometimes it's about putting the right people in the right roles, filling critical skill gaps, or improving leadership and direction. I'll conduct a comprehensive audit of your existing team to identify what's working, what isn't, and where the gaps are. From there, we'll create a plan that might involve upskilling current staff, strategic new hires, or bringing in external specialists.

How do you ensure the people you recommend will actually deliver results?

Most importantly, I spend time in your business before we go through a recruitment process to make sure we're hiring for the right role, with the right responsibilities and the right skill requirements. And that's the crucial step that many companies miss.

I also use a rigorous vetting process that goes far beyond reviewing CVs and conducting standard interviews. I assess not just their technical skills but their strategic thinking, cultural fit, and track record of delivering measurable outcomes. I've conducted over 1,000 interviews for marketing roles, so I've seen it all.

What's your involvement after the team is built?

That depends on what you need. Some clients want me to help with the initial onboarding and setup, then hand over complete control. Others prefer ongoing support to ensure the team stays aligned and performs optimally. I can provide anything from a one-off team design and recruitment service to ongoing marketing leadership support. We'll discuss what level of ongoing involvement makes sense for your situation.

What if I hire someone and they don't work out?

Poor hires happen, but they're much less likely when you have a structured process and clear success criteria from the start. I help you establish probationary periods with defined milestones, so you can identify and address issues early.

I can't offer any guarantees as there are too many variables outside of my control - like the onboarding process, management styles, internal office culture, and so on. But if a hire truly isn't working out, I can assist with parts of the replacement processes on a case-by-case basis.

Can you help with specific marketing roles I've never hired before?

Absolutely. Many business leaders struggle when they need to hire for roles they don't fully understand - like Chief Marketing Officers, Heads of Marketing, performance marketing specialists and designers. I'll help you understand exactly what these roles entail, what experience and skills to look for, and how to assess candidates effectively. I can also advise on realistic salary expectations and whether the role needs to be full-time, part-time, or could be filled by an external specialist.

Yes, I can. I often provide training on specific areas of marketing the team feels they're lacking in (like digital marketing, for example).
